A Brief Report on TCF Activities in 2023

A Brief Report on TCF Activities in 2023

Since the Covid-19 Pandemic is over in Thailand, myself and my colleagues at our Thinking Classroom Foundation (TCF) could travel to the Burma border to provide RWCT training in Mae Hong Son, Mae Sot and Phan Nga. In the second week of January next year, we are planning to go to Sankhalaburi to provide RWCT TOT to Mon teachers. For the teachers from our partner organizations inside Burma, we still provide online training via Zoom application.

Apart from the teacher training, we work on education policy and curriculum development. The remarkable achievement this year is that the Federal Democracy Education Policy which TCF had advocated for more than ten years has been approved by the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) in May this year. The NUCC consists of Ethnic Resistance Organizations, elected MPs of the National League for Democracy, the (exiled) National Unity Government and various civil society organizations.

Now, the education departments of the above organizations are implementing education leading to the Federal Democracy Education System. According to the Federal Democracy Education Policy, we are changing the previous content-based curriculum to competency-based curriculum. TCF is playing a leading role in creating the competency-based curriculum and active learning and critical thinking pedagogy for basic education.

I hope that the reign of the military rule will be ended in the near future and we will be able to rebuild our country. TCF will take its role in reforming education.

TCF’s role during the education crisis in Myanmar

During the education crisis in Myanmar especially after the military coup in February 2021 and pandemic, TCF extends its network to provide education in emergency to the young people of Myanmar. The following organizations are TCF’s partners in education:

  1. Ethnic based education organizations including Chin, Kachin, Karen, Karenni, Kayan, Mon, Shan and Wa.
  2. Faith-based education organizations (Church-based and Monastery-based schools)
  3. Teacher Education Network among three education universities, twenty-five education colleges, ethnic-based, faith-based, community-based and migrant schools
  4. Chiang Mai University’s Regional Center for Sustainable Development (RCSD) and University College London (UCL) promoting peace and justice through education
  5. Virtual Federal University for teacher education in the conflict effected regions
  6. Virtual schools through online platform for primary and secondary education
  7. Prospect Burma (for its transitional period)

Working with these partner organizations, TCF’s members contribute their knowledge and experiences in three main educational areas:

  1. Active Learning and Critical Thinking (RWCT teaching strategies)
  2. Education Policy (Federal Education Policy and School Policy)
  3. Curriculum Development (competency-based curriculum, local curriculum, mother tongue based multi-lingual education and peace education)

Besides, TCF Chairperson Dr. Thein Lwin provides lectures (via Zoom) on education policy to the students (over 300) from three education universities and twenty-five education colleges as a volunteer. He usually provides suggestions to individual students, parents and teachers for their education related problems and future education path. He also participates in the media interviews.

Activity photos are not included for those persons who do not wish to show their participation in the activities because of their security concerns.
